Course Description
This course is an introduction to linguistics, the scientific study of language, with a particular focus on Hispanic linguistics. After an introduction to what is the nature of language in general and the study of Spanish as a foreign language, we will study the structure of the Spanish language, focusing on phonetics and phonology (the study of sounds) and then morphosyntax (the study of the structure of words and sentences). Once we have examined the Spanish language from the formal point of view, that is, its structure, we will study the language at the social level, focusing on how the Spanish language varies in the Spanish-speaking world, how language is used to carry out different speech acts, how the Spanish language is acquired in immersion contexts, and finally some ramifications of our attitudes towards certain varieties. No prior linguistics knowledge is required to take this class.
Course Narrative
In Introduction to Spanish Linguistics, we learned that if someone knows a language they have an understanding of the meaning (semantics/pragmatics), pronunciation (phonetics/phonology), grammar (morphosyntax), how it changes depending on the context (sociolinguistics), and how you learn (the acquisition). This course contributed to the fulfillment of the outcome of MLO 2: Linguistics by analyzing phonetics, morphology, and syntax. Phonetics and phonology we can associate with which parts of the mouth are being touched with each sound. Morphology, which is the structure of the word, can be associated with the endings of words changing. Syntax, which refers to the structure of sentences, can be associated with the order we put our words in sentences in. Furthermore, we learned some variances in phonemes in the Spanish speaking countries. For example, in Puerto Rico instead of stating "olvidado" they may say "olvidao." I would like to look more into the differences in variances for all countries so I am able to understand other accents more when communicating. This course can also be connected to the course of SPAN 345 Bilingualism and helps us understand more variations in between countries.
