Secondary Culture Other than Hispanic Cultures
In addition to the Spanish language and Hispanic cultures, the student demonstrates a general knowledge of a socio-cultural group other than a Hispanic one or mainstream American culture. The student develops a basic understanding of the ways of thinking (ideas, beliefs, attitudes, values, and philosophies), the behavioral practices (patterns of social interactions) and the cultural products – both tangible and intangible (for example, art, history, literature, music) – of the second culture.
4.1 Students describe concepts of culture and use that understanding in their comparison of Hispanic cultures with a second culture other than those.
4.2 Students will analyze and make connections between the perspectives, ways of thinking, behavioral practices, and cultural products of a second culture other than Hispanic cultures.
Reflective Narrative
Under this MLO, I have completed the following course: HCOM 346: African American Life/ History (Spring 2014).
In respect to our cultural diversity within our own major of Spanish Language and Hispanic Cultures, I have demonstrated a general knowledge and appreciation for other cultures, such as African American Life/ History. This course focused on themes such as African American culture, freedom, inequality, community, and identity. Personally, this course was very eye opening because I took it right after the Black Lives Matter movement began. I have always been intrigued by other cultures, but never truly looked into Black Culture, or at least in detail. I just had an appreciation for their culture, but this course allowed me to hear about realities of the African American experiences in my class, literature, and history. For this reason, I did a film review on Do the Right Thing, in which emphasizes the time period where racial conflicts were arising in a community. This is also a reflection of the racial conflicts arising in the world today. Here I make an emphasis on the struggle between the forces of love and hate in a world of racism and how we must do the right thing. This course helped me reflect on the experiences within the Black community and how social position variables, racism, prejudice, discrimination, oppression, and segregation have influenced who African-Americans are today.
Certainly, this MLO was more challenging than I initially expected. I simply thought it was going to be more along the lines of history, but the narratives we read shattered my heart. I will forever remember 12 Years a Slave. I think because of all the courses I took before, I was a little engrossed in Spanish colonization and Latinx experiences that I failed to connect the similarities to African Americans experiences, but this helped me open my eyes to the issues we are having in present-day America. This course inspired me to take another course PSY 355- Social Psychology and Social Justice so I can see how social psychology can be used to improve the lives of disadvantaged groups, such as African Americans. In general, this course helped me in my personal growth by expanding my knowledge and appreciation for African American culture and gave me the opportunity to hear and appreciate their narratives as well as I do Latinx.
