MY JOURNEY AND BEYOND
When I first began my academic career at CSUMB, I had no idea what I wanted to be. Language has always been important to me because it’s necessary to be able to communicate in several ways in a world where we all come from different backgrounds. Although I did not have a specific career in mind, I knew language would be involved because of its significance in my life hence my declared major in 2010, World Languages and Cultures. Over the years, I struggled with my mental health, which caused me to take time off of school and re-enroll several times. The major evolved like myself, from World Languages and Cultures with an emphasis in Spanish, to Spanish with an emphasis in Literature and Culture, to Spanish Language and Hispanic Cultures. Since it has been over a decade, I have since changed career goals, but have kept my love of language. I declared a minor in psychology to assist with me ultimately applying to a MSN (Master of Nursing) program. This degree program in Spanish Language and Hispanic Cultures has helped me understand the significance of Hispanic language and cultures, which will ultimately aid me in assisting the Latinx community in my future career goals.
This major has taught me that my learning will never cease. I came from a sheltered upbringing and have learned so much about Latinx history, cultures, and communities. This has inspired me to continuously explore and aid the Latinx community in my future endeavors, whether it be working in a hospital or another medical center. I am now able to empathize with others more inclusive of their backgrounds.
I am proud of my progression in speaking and writing Spanish. It is nowhere near perfect, but it has improved immensely. I have improved my academic writing skills in Spanish, which I did not think was possible and now I can fully understand Spanish literature. I am most proud of finally being able to graduate as a Spanish major. I also did not think this was going to happen, but here I am 12 years later (haha).
For the future, I would like to apply what I have learned from experiences of Latinx narratives and apply them to the future community I will be working with. Understanding narratives in depth will assist me with empathizing with all people I will encounter and trying to aid them in their mental needs.
